Independent Contractor Agreement
The Independent Contractor agreement is the ideal choice for those looking for flexibility and control over their own schedule. It comes with rewards and responsibility.
Independent Contractors contracting with NOVA are self-employed and choose when and at which school/s they offer their lessons. Their business contract with NOVA allows them to teach under the NOVA brand name with access to NOVA’s customer base, using NOVA’s methods, materials and facilities. This helps the Contractor quickly get established. After that, the Contractors for whom this option pays the largest financial dividends soon recognize the added value of investing in refining their skills to build their own regular client base. While the contract gives access to NOVA’s customers, payment is contingent on customers reserving the lessons offered by the Contractor. Training is unpaid but there is an extensive range of training seminars available for Contractors who want to improve their own teaching skills or gain qualifications to teach special types of lessons. After successfully completing the training requirements, Contractors with NOVA may also offer lessons to clients of NOVA’s sister brand, Gaba, a brand that specializes in One-on-one lessons (with Learning Studios mainly located in larger urban areas).
The Independent Contractor is self-employed and therefore responsible for registering themself at the tax office, filing their own tax returns at the end of each tax year, obtaining Qualified Invoice Issuer status, and reporting the consumption tax they receive from NOVA through a separate tax filing each year. Independent Contractors are also responsible for enrolling themselves in health insurance and pension at their local ward office. Independent Contractors must also cover their own transportation costs. Being an Independent Contractor includes:
The use of NOVA’s facilities, utilities, materials and teaching curriculum, without charge.
A flexible working schedule.
A replacement instructor arrangement service available from 400 yen per lesson.
An end of contract bonus based on individual performance. Monthly incentives for the most highly-rated instructors, based on client satisfaction surveys.
Skill remuneration determined by a points system based on client satisfaction of up to 340 yen per lesson for those re-contracting.
Remuneration of 1,430 – 1,930 yen per 40-minute lesson taught for new instructors, depending on the day, lesson type and student attendance.
Potential Earnings: 40 lessons per week (for reference purposes only) (1,452 x 8) x 3 for weekdays = 34,848 (1,652 x 8) x 2 for weekends = 26,432 34,848 + 26,432 = 61,280 per week. 61,280 x 4.35 (average number of weeks in a month) = 266,568 yen
Notes: 1) This is based on a new instructor teaching 40 lessons per week, with a starting skill allowance of 0 yen. 2) This does not include any of the additional remuneration amounts paid for teaching larger group classes or designated 1-1 lessons.
Career opportunities: For career-driven, high performing Contractors interested in pursuing a key player role in the business after completing a minimum of two six-month contracts with NOVA, there are opportunities for career development, starting with Instructor Support Manager positions.
